The team of the Republic of Belarus from July 2 to 13 takes part in the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2023), which takes place in Chiba (Japan).
The competition includes two rounds of three tasks each. The questions cover different areas of mathematics, mainly geometry, number theory, algebra and combinatorics.
The results are already available. The Belarusian team performed quite successfully in this prestigious competition with all 6 members of the team winning 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Silver was won by: Matvey Zorko, 11th grade student of the Lyceum of the Belarusian State University, Matvey Vylegzhanin, 10th grade student of the Gymnasium No. 41 of Minsk named after Serebryany V.Kh. University "and Mikhail Raykhman, a student of the ninth grade of the State Educational Institution "Gymnasium No. 41 of Minsk named after Serebryany V.Kh."
Bronze medals were awarded to Ivan Korshunov, a student of the 10th grade of the State Educational Institution "Gymnasium No. 2 in Vitebsk" and Pavel Titov, a student of the 10th grade of the State Educational Institution "Gymnasium No. 51 of the city of Gomel".
More than 1000 students from over 100 countries of the world took part in the Olympiad. According to the results of participation, the team of the Republic of Belarus takes 16th place among all teams.
Note: The International Mathematical Olympiad is an annual world championship in mathematics among high school students. The first competition took place in 1959 in Romania with the participation of seven countries.
Last year, the Olympiad took place in Norway, in 2021 and 2020 - in Russia.
The key idea is to bring together young people from all over the world so that they can solve math problems in a spirit of friendly competition. Despite their young age, each of the finalists successfully finds different solutions to any problem, persistently seeks answers to the questions posed, confidently operates with logic in search of evidence and arguments. It is these qualities that will be useful in the future when choosing a profession.
Moreover, participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad provides not only a good incentive for gifted students to demonstrate their knowledge in exact science, but also to establish lifelong friendships with peers from other countries.
We congratulate the guys on a well-deserved victory and wish them new successful achievements!
