2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. In our country, the state attaches great importance to the work of perpetuating the memory of those killed in the performance of military duty, providing assistance to Afghan soldiers, as well as their families.

In order to further improve the activities of educational institutions in the patriotic education of students all schools will have the Republican Ten Day of Civil and Patriotic Affairs “Afghanistan in the Fate of Our Countrymen” from February 15 to 24.

The organizer is the Republican Center for Ecology and Local History with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus and the public association “Belarusian Union of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan”.

Within the framework of the ten day, a number of information and educational events are planned to be held in educational institutions aimed at promoting the ideas of preserving peace and the memory of internationalist soldiers.

Schoolchildren will take part in rallies at memorial sites to lay flowers, they will attend patriotic meetings with internationalist soldiers, their relatives and friends, then they’ll write down their memories and will collect information about fellow countrymen who took part in the fighting in Afghanistan.

During information hours dedicated to the history of the Afghan war (“Afghan war 1979 – 1989”, “Tragedy and valor of Afghanistan”, “Distant echo of the Afghan war”) and lessons of courage dedicated to the memory of internationalist soldiers (“Bravery. Courage. Honor”, “Time chose us, whirled in the Afghan blizzard”, “War was fated for them”), the children will discuss with teachers the importance of preserving and strengthening peace as the highest value, the peace-loving policy of the Republic of Belarus, a sense of pride in their Fatherland, readiness for creative work in good of the Motherland.

Students will have an opportunity to participate in thematic competitions of children's creativity: drawing, poster, video ones. An exhibitions of photographs of the war and post-war years “The Afghan War in the fate of my loved ones”, “We will not forget their feat”, book exhibitions “The book takes us back to Afghanistan” will open their doors for students.

During the Republican ten day of civil-patriotic affairs, viewings and discussions of newsreel documentaries and feature films dedicated to the Afghan war will take place; Hiking trips and excursions to memorable places in the region will be organized as well as visits to thematic museums of educational institutions, including VR excursions.

In museums of educational institutions, students will be engaged in replenishing the funds of existing museums with thematic materials, creating displays and rotating exhibitions that will be dedicated to fellow countrymen who fought in Afghanistan.

A large-scale “Obelisk” campaign will be held throughout Belarus to improve memorials, monuments, and individual graves of fallen internationalist soldiers.

The central event of the ten day will be the annual republican competition “Every time has its own heroes.”

No need to say other events will definitely take place. These are: competitions of military-patriotic songs and projects “Sense the feat of heroes with your heart”, “Afghan war - living memory”, “Time and memory” as well as conferences, both online and in real, with the presentation of scientific and creative works of students. Sporting events dedicated to the memory of internationalist soldiers are in the program as well.
