Education for the future of the country

The leadership of the Ministry of Education summed up the preliminary results of the admission campaign in higher educational institutions of the country today.

It was noted that the Ministry of Education is conducting a serious analysis in this direction. This year there were quite a lot of innovations in the admission campaign. One of the main ones is that the admission campaign actually began with the graduation campaign of general secondary education institutions, namely, with the passing of a centralized exam.

Minister of Education Andriy Ivanets is convinced: “Today, an in-depth analysis of the results of the centralized exam is very important, which shows that the structure and content of the tasks of the CE fully corresponded to the school curriculum. This allowed us to solve a number of issues.”

First, these are rather high results. The department analyzed the average scores for all subjects in the republic - they amounted to 60 - 65 points.

The second important aspect is that in all regions and in the city of Minsk, there are very even results, which indicate that general secondary education in the country is at a high level, is affordable and does not depend on whether the child studies in a small rural school or is a graduate of the capital's gymnasium or lyceum.

“Here we see the need to continue work in this direction in terms of unification and assessment criteria based on the results of a centralized exam and those assessment standards that are currently used at school. This will create an understandable, clear, favorable picture for children and parents of a clear understanding of what the grading system is at school, what is the grading system that they receive in the centralized exam,” the Minister believes.

Further, the head of the department spoke about educational trajectories. The Ministry of Education conducted an in-depth analysis in the context of graduates of basic and specialized classes, which showed that graduates of specialized classes have average scores in subjects that they took at the CE by 10-20 points higher than those of graduates of ordinary basic classes.

According to Andrei Ivanets, this suggests that the trajectory that has been implemented for a number of years, namely, pre-profile training at the level of 8-9 grades and profile training at the level of 10-11 grades, is absolutely correct, both from the point of view of in terms of early career guidance, and in terms of the arrival of very highly prepared graduates of the 11th grade for admission to universities.

Thanks to this, a little less than half of the 9th grade graduates will come to our colleges this year, and a fairly large number of places are provided for them. Thus, the enrollment figures have been increased by more than a thousand state-funded places for institutions of secondary specialized education. Overall, more than 43,000 ninth graders are expected to enter college this year.

This testifies to the high prestige of professional education. This is evidenced by such figures that in a number of specialties for children who entered the secondary specialized level of education, being graduates of the 9th grade, the competition amounted to more than four people per place. For example, such specialties as "Architectural design of the urban environment" - 4.4 people per place; "Design" - 4.2; "Painting" - 3.5; "Architectural design" - 2.6; "Nursing" - 2.2; "Medicine" - 2.1.

Admission to institutions of secondary specialized education was carried out according to the average score of the certificate. In a very wide range of specialties, passing scores were extremely high. For example, for the specialty “Jurisprudence” at the Law College of the Belarusian State University, the passing scores were 10.0 – 9.8. In the Minsk Radio Engineering College of BSUIR, the passing scores are 9.9 - 10.0. In the medical college for the specialty "General Medicine", the Minsk Financial and Economic College for the specialty "Banking", respectively - 9.3 and 10.0.

“I would like to note that the instruction given by the Head of State at the last year’s meeting, so that we select our gifted and motivated children as much as possible for this admission campaign, has been fulfilled. According to our preliminary data, more than 3.3 thousand medalists will come to our universities. In addition to these medalists, another 2.4 thousand children who entered universities without entrance examinations are winners of republican, international, and university olympiads,” Andrei Ivanets said.

The Ministry of Education conducted an analysis of the admission campaign in a new format for applicants based on targeted training. The innovations were the removal of this stage in separate terms and the holding of an internal exam. Thus, the analysis of innovations showed that the allocation of a set of target students to a separate stage made it possible to exclude the resubmission of documents by applicants between the target and the main set, which previously took place simultaneously.

The internal examination is also fully justified itself. This fact is noted by the vast majority of members of the subject commissions, which included both teachers of higher educational institutions and school teachers. The exam made it possible to see the applicant, to assess the level of his preparation for the internal test.

It is worth noting that every third applicant entered the internal tests, that is, without passing the CT and it is more than 17 thousand children.

“This once again confirms that we must create all the necessary conditions so that not only highly trained, but also motivated children come to our educational institutions,” the head of the department believes.
