Silver medals for Belarusian Young Mathematicians

The 15th International Tournament of Young Mathematicians took place from November 15 to 26 in an online format.

ITYM is a team competition for students to try their skills in solving difficult mathematic tasks, distinctly and correctly present the results and preparation of all the strongest arguments possible to defend their point of view during public discussions.

This event is quite tough and serious. It consists of several consecutive battles where teams present researches on given topics one team after another and act as opponents and reviewers for other contestants.

The tournament welcomed 19 teams (The highest number ever) from 10 countries: Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, India, UAE, Pakistan, Roumania, Thailand and France.

Belarusian team did quite well, thus winning two qualification battles and a 2nd degree diploma with silver medals in the final. The team had winners of the 24th Republican Tournament of Young Mathematicians (various degree’s diploma holders), with a majority of participants studying in Universities – BSU, Faculty of applied mathematics and informatics and BSUIR university.

Among the silver medalists of the ITYM-2023: Kirill Bukato, Alexander Vertinsky, Matvey Zorko, Nikita Shutro - 1st year students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics of BSU; Artem Podgaisky, a 1st year student at BSUIR and Igor Shmygalev, an 11th grade student at the State Educational Institution “Gymnasium No. 56 of Gomel.”

The nomination “Best Speaker” was also victorious for our team and Igor Shmygalev received a prize.

The team leader, deputy dean of the Belarusian State University of Physics and Mathematics, co-chairman of the organizing committee of the Republican Tournament of Young Mathematicians, Boris Zadvorny, noted not only the mathematical abilities, but also the impeccable oratory skills of our guys.

In such competitions, participants learn not only to solve problems, but also to work in a team and effectively defend their point of view.

Among the scientific consultants are Maxim Vaskovsky, head of the Department of Higher Mathematics of the FACS BSU and Yaroslav Zadvorny, a graduate of the FACS BSU.
