Ministry of Education approves new elective classes. This time – dance

Resolution of the Ministry of Education No. 346 of November 15, 2023 approves the curriculum of elective classes “Sports Dance” for schoolchildren in grades 1–4 and “Dance” for students in grades 1–6 of general secondary education institutions.

The curriculum of elective classes “Sports Dance” is designed for 34 hours in grades I–II and 35 hours in grades III–IV (1 hour per week). The emphasis is to promote the development of physical, artistic and creative abilities of students through sports dances.

A number of tasks are identified. Thus, educational ones introduce the history, basic concepts and directions of sports dance, and also teach children the technique and understanding of the basic principles of dance movements in various dances. Recreational ones will help develop physical abilities (strength, coordination, speed, flexibility, special endurance), instill healthy lifestyle skills. Educational tasks will develop artistic and aesthetic taste and artistry, creative initiative and the ability to express personality in dance, create an individual style, instill feelings of camaraderie, dignity, and self-demandingness.

This curriculum consists of two modules: “Theory”, is aimed at introducing students to the rules of safe behavior in the classroom, theoretical information about sports dance, special terminology, the basics of musical literacy, and “Practice” - ensuring the physical development of students and mastering sports techniques dance.

The “Practice” module is the main one and includes general and special physical training, learning dance movements. General physical training is aimed at developing basic motor qualities (endurance, strength, speed, agility, flexibility) necessary in educational activities, strengthening the health of students.

Special physical training is aimed at developing specific motor qualities and skills, increasing the functional capabilities of the body. Choreographic training includes a list of figures for each dance, mastering dance techniques of different directions.

The resolution states that the forms and methods of teaching and upbringing are recommended taking into account the age characteristics of students in grades I–IV. The main form is a group lesson, consisting of three stages (preparatory, main, final).

As a result of mastering the content of this curriculum, students will have an idea of a healthy lifestyle, the history of the origin of the studied sports dances, the rules of safe behavior in class, the rhythmic basis of the studied dances, perform the basic elements of dances, as well as the basics of musical literacy in relation to the music of the learned dances.

In turn, the curriculum of elective classes “Dance” is intended for grades I–VI and is designed for 34 hours in grades I–II and 35 hours in grades III–VI (1 hour per week).

The basis is to introduce students to the art of dance. Among the priority tasks are the harmonization of the physical, spiritual and intellectual aspects of students’ personality; development of musical ear and coordination of movements; acquaintance with the elements of dances of various styles; development of imaginative thinking and creative abilities; education of artistic taste.

The main content of the curriculum consists of topics that require students to master the elements of classical, folk, historical dance, and elements of modern plastic arts.

The main form of training and education is group lessons. As a result of mastering the content of this curriculum, students will have an understanding of correct posture; musical concepts; be able to navigate the tempo and rhythm of music; expressively perform movements to music; know the simplest movements of Russian and Belarusian folk dances, perform elements of polonaise, pas-de-grace, polka, gallop; maintain beautiful posture while performing dance movements; correctly perform the basic movements of classical dance, elements of the Italian dance “Tarantella”, elements of Spanish and Italian dances and convey different emotional moods.

Children will also be taught how to use modern plastic arts, perform technical combinations with artistry, and analyze their own performance of dance movements in order to see mistakes and be able to correct them.
