European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is a true inspiration on the way to success

Published:19.04.2023

The 12th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad took place in Portorož, Slovenia, from 13 to 19 April.

151 participants from fifty-five countries of the world took part in the mathematical competition.

The result of the participation of the team of the Republic of Belarus was four bronze medals.

Medals were awarded to: a student of the 11th grade of the State Educational Establishment “Gymnasium No. 3 named after O.I. Solomova, Grodno” Elena Vertinskaya; XI grade student of the State Educational Institution "Gymnasium No. 2 of Vitebsk" Alina Veryutina; a student of the XI grade of the State Educational Institution "Gymnasium No. 58 of Gomel named after F.P. Gaaz" Anna Petrishina and a student of the IX grade of the State Educational Institution "Gymnasium No. 41 of Minsk named after Serebryany V.Kh." Marina Ilyina.

The Olympics have been held since 2012. Participating countries delegate teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age.

For the first time, the Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad was held in Cambridge, it was attended by teams from 16 European countries and 3 guest countries. In 2022, EGMO took place in Hungary. The next competition is planned to be held in Georgia. Dates will be determined later.

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematical competition, which is similar to the International Mathematical Olympiad in terms of its conditions. True, the EGMO assignments are a little easier, but they require a little more mathematical technique than usually at national olympiads.

The goal of the Olympiad is to provide an opportunity for more girls to take part in international mathematical competitions and thus support mathematically gifted students in all European countries. Non-European countries can also take part in the Olympiad as guests. Competitions for participants are held in two days, every day the participants need to solve three problems.

By the way, the team of the Republic of Belarus annually, starting from 2013, successfully takes part in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad. In 2015, the 4th European Mathematical Olympiad for Girls was successfully held in the Republic of Belarus.

It is worth noting that historically there are not so many
