Belarusian school students to start studying AI from September 1. New informatics program approved

Ahead of the new academic year, the Ministry of Education approved Resolution No. 132 of July 22, 2026, updating the Computer Science curriculum for grades 6-9. A key innovation will be the integration of artificial intelligence technologies, placing Belarus among the leading countries in the implementation of AI competencies in school education.

The curriculum is designed for 139 academic hours (one hour per week) and includes six content areas: from algorithms and hardware to computer modeling.

The primary focus is on developing functional literacy. The theoretical foundation is inextricably linked with practical experience: students will solve interdisciplinary problems at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, physics, biology, and geography, applying digital skills in everyday life.

A separate topic, "Artificial Intelligence," is included in the 8th grade. Students will learn to correctly formulate queries (prompts), verify the accuracy of generated data, and use AI to process text, audio, and video information.

In the 9th grade, AI is planned to be used in modeling tasks. This will develop students' skills in consciously interacting with digital tools and critically analyzing results.

The updated course places a strong emphasis on cybersecurity and digital hygiene. Students will learn the basics of personal data protection, recognizing deepfakes and fraudulent schemes, and the rules of netiquette. Particular emphasis is placed on the responsible use of AI: respecting copyright, verifying content, and preventing manipulation.

Furthermore, the program includes familiarization with national educational resources, which fosters respect for the achievements of Belarusian specialists in the field of information and communications technology.

To ensure flexibility in the educational process, teachers are given the opportunity to reallocate up to 25% of their teaching time between topics depending on the students' level of preparation.

The updated course is aimed at developing competencies in demand in the modern digital economy: analyzing information from various sources, setting AI tasks and evaluating results, collaborating with cloud services, creating visual and multimedia products, and developing algorithmic and logical thinking.

The new program is designed not only to provide students with theoretical knowledge but also to prepare a generation capable of operating safely, ethically, and effectively in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
